April is always a busy time for selling to schools and teachers: The release of the annual school budget means that pretty much all companies target this time of year to promote their products and services. The trouble is that sometimes your campaign can be so broad that it can seem very impersonal.

That’s why sometimes it can be good to tailor your message to piggyback onto topical news stories or significant events in the school calendar. The recent announcement of new funding for Primary School Sport and PE – coming just weeks before the release of the new School Budgets and 3 months before National School Sports Week – presents an ideal opportunity for you to embark upon a more targeted approach to your marketing.

The Government’s announcement of new funding for Primary School Sport and PE, worth £150m a year for the next two years, means that Head Teachers at Primary Schools across the UK will be charged with deciding how to spend a lump sum of around £9,000. The money is ring-fenced, meaning that it must be spent on school sport and is being underpinned by tougher assessment of sport provision by Ofsted to ensure the funding delivers the maximum benefit for pupils.

Proposals around initial teacher training have been particularly praised by Lord Coe and Chair of the Youth Sport Trust Baroness Sue Campbell who commented, “For too long a child's first experience of physical education has been delivered by teachers who lack the confidence and in some cases the competence to deliver PE well”.

All of this is great news for sports equipment and teacher training suppliers who are interested in selling to schools and teachers. You know who has the money to spend (Primary School Head Teachers), how much they have to spend (around £9,000), what they are looking to spend it on (sports equipment and teacher training), when they might be looking to spend it (National School Sports Week - June 24th – 28th) and a key aspect of their decision making process (satisfying Ofsted sports provision assessments).

Now get personalising and topicalising (may not be a real word)!
